Vietri Sul Mare

Vietri Sul Mare, even the name has a romantic sound to it, and romantic this part of Italy certainly is. The primary attractions in Vietri Sul Mare include excellent regional cuisine, rich culture (both modern and ancient), beaches, gorgeous scenery, a jagged coastline, world-class skiing, architecture, water-sports, opera, health / beauty spas, and picturesque ruins.

Travellers who desire an informal, diverse holiday and those who are romantics at heart will enjoy this fairy-tale part of Italy. Likewise, those who enjoy history and art will find much to like about the city.

One of the area’s most fascinating archaeological sites is Paestum.  It’s found about 100 kilometres to the south of Naples and involves an interesting look at Greek civilisation. This ancient city was founded about 600 B.C. by Greek colonists, it continued to thrive until the Roman Empire’s decline.

The city’s archaeological ruins were first uncovered in 1752 by Charles III, who ordered that a road be built between Calabria and Campani. The last remains of the Roman city are contained within the archaeological park.

What we call the Basilica, always a popular tourist destination, is actually a temple built in 550 B.C. for the goddess Hera. Likewise, around 450 B.C. the citizens built the Temple of Neptune.

Also in the city, you’ll find the forum, the Via Sacra, the Amphitheatre, the Tempio Italico, and some interesting public buildings.
