Ravello

One of the most beautiful and popular Amalfi coast holiday destinations is Ravello. The settlement, with a population of only 2,000, overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. Each year, talented musicians host a musical festival in Ravello, as classical concerts take place in the town’s gardens, all of them with breathtaking views.  If you visit during the summer months, you’ll almost certainly be able to take in one of these festivals if you choose.

Because of Ravello’s position on the cliffs overlooking Amalfi, it has become known for its views as well as for its gardens.  Ravellow at one time was part of the territory known as the Republic of Amalfi.  Now it’s its own entity, an historic, peaceful village that has become popular with honeymooners and other tourists.

The major tourist attractions in Ravello are its two well-known gardens, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Both gardens are open throughout the year to the public and visitors are welcome to wander through its plants and take in the amazing views of the coast.

In addition, Ravellow is home ton the venerable Duomo, an impressive cathedral that was dedicated to San Pantaleone. Within the crypt is the Museo del Duomo and is something you’ll want to see. Exhibits inside include a marble sculpture created by Nicola di Bartolomeo da Foggia.

Musical presentations are a prominent feature of Ravello, each year, the Concert Society organises a schedule of concerts which runs from March to November.  Most of these concerts are held outside with a backdrop of sea and sky within the scenic gardens.

The major church in Ravello, the Cathedral of S. Pantaleone, was built in 1087. It’s a fascinating visit.  In fact, “fascinating” and even “awe-inspiring” are the terms that best describe a holiday in Ravello.
