Furore and Praiano

Furore and Praiano are both chief cities in the Amalfi area of Italy–and both have an allure that draws travellers year-round.

The heart of this area is the piazza, which is dominated chiefly by its enormous cathedral, which is a mighty achievement of gold and of mosaic work.  There is a well-known stairway which leads to the mystical and impressive Chiostro del Paradiso.

This spot is mysterious for one thing because it’s more than a thousand years old and indeed, it is the most common meeting spot that visitors to the Costiera use. That’s because all roads heading into the interior of the country converge here.

Also here at this point of convergence is the amazing Valle de Mullini.

Beginning at the Bay of Conca de Marina and going through to Capo Sottile is a zone with a spectacular view of the Costiera Amalfitana.  In this area you’ll see a sign which welcomes you to Furore.

And if you’re like most people, your first thought will be “Where?”  It’s quite difficult to see because it’s so small and so hidden.  To find it, you have to peer down from the street to the spot where it’s located, near the bottom of a small fjord which has been cut into the cliffs. This tiny fishing village crouches there among the rocks; you can behold its charms better from the ocean

While you’re in this part of Italy, feel free to visit the Marine Republic Palio. Here you’ll find a one-of-a-kind opportunity to observe the horse-race teams of the Repubbliche Marinare going full force.

The world famous Palio takes place in June of each year and rotates among various Italian cities; it’s always accompanied by elaborate presentations and processions by characters wearing period outfits.

If you visit in the summer time, chances are you’ll be able to take in some of the many concerts. A mystic atmosphere and melodies fill the air on classical concert nights.

One other spot you’ll want to visit is the Emerald Grotto; this is one of the best-known and visited caves in this area.
